Woman wearing the witch knot necklace in an old stone cottage

Their energy stops at the knot.

The Celtic witch knot, with your birthstone at its heart. Worn at the throat for centuries.

It started with my grandmother's knot.

My grandmother wore a small silver knot at her throat every day of her life, in a stone cottage outside Doolin, in County Clare. She never took it off. When people asked, she said it kept what was hers and sent the rest on its way.

The day it came to me, I understood. I wore it through the hardest year I have had, and other people's noise stopped reaching me the way it used to.

Arausi began when I wanted the women around me to have one of their own, with their birth month's stone at its heart.

The witch knot necklace on an ancient carved Celtic stone

A knot older than the names we give it.

Long before anyone called it a witch knot, the triquetra was carved into standing stones and drawn in the margins of Irish manuscripts: three arcs, one unbroken line, no beginning and no end.

Three arcs, one lineFaith, love and unity in Celtic tradition, woven so that none can be pulled out alone.
Worn at the throatFolk practice kept it close to the voice and the heart, against envy, whispers and the weight of other people.
Your stone at its heartWe set your birth month's stone in the centre, so the oldest charm we know becomes yours.

Your stone at the heart

Some women wear a charm. Others wear armour.

The witch knot has been worn at the throat for centuries for one reason: to keep your own energy in and everyone else's out. Putting it on each morning is a small, deliberate act, and that is the part most women say stays with them.

Good to know.

What is a witch knot?

It is the triquetra: three interlocked arcs drawn in one unbroken line. Celtic tradition reads it as faith, love and unity; folk practice wears it as a protective charm.

Is it a witchcraft symbol? I'm not into that.

No. Despite the name, there is no spell, ritual or belief that comes with it. The same three-arc knot is carved on old Celtic crosses, where Christians read it as the Holy Trinity, and it has been worn by women of every faith, and of none, for centuries.

"Witch knot" is the old folk name for a protective charm: something you wear for meaning, the way you might wear a cross, a St Christopher or a family ring. You simply put it on. What it means to you is yours to decide.
